Why University Is Like The Soviet Union

  • You make no money

  • You work very hard

  • The work you do is of very little importance

  • You wait in lineups to get your food

  • People consume cheap vodka in excess

  • Your life is consumed by bureaucratic procedures

  • You dream of getting out and living in freedom

  • You hope your work will one day change the world, but it won't

  • Some of your friends are communists

  • You see security officials everywhere

Hah!

When I was in grad school, our unofficial motto was a re-working of the old Soviet-era joke:

'They pretend to teach us, and we pretend to work.'
