You make no money
You work very hard
The work you do is of very little importance
You wait in lineups to get your food
People consume cheap vodka in excess
Your life is consumed by bureaucratic procedures
You dream of getting out and living in freedom
You hope your work will one day change the world, but it won't
Some of your friends are communists
You see security officials everywhere

Hah!
When I was in grad school, our unofficial motto was a re-working of the old Soviet-era joke:
'They pretend to teach us, and we pretend to work.'
